INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM Introduction to Journalism will explore the evolution of journalism in America, comparing emerging 21st century journalism with that of past generations. The course will examine the role of journalism in a democratic society, including journalism standards, best practices and ethics; the impact that social, cultural and market forces have on journalism; and the relationship between journalism and the community. It will also examine the workforce and career opportunities in the industry.

MEDIA PRODUCTION I Laboratory course introduces students to the roles and processes used to create social media and journalistic stories. Students will survey media production techniques, learn how to do research, conduct interviews, and observe and participate in the creation of original journalistic stories. Students will be expected to attend events and meet with interview subjects outside of the lab meeting time.

Includes reporting, proof-reading your copy, interviewing, and producing original media to augment the written word. Includes reporting, editing assigning stories, quality control of copy, news organization business and management, interviewing, and producing original media to augment the written word. Students will be expected to attend events and meet with interview subjects outside of the lab meeting time.

FEATURE WRITING Prerequisite: JOU 2100C In this course, students will flex their creative writing skills to maximize the impact on a chosen audience. From lifestyle journalism to corporate profiles and nonprofit successes, students will conceptualize and execute feature content through all stages of development. Upon completion, successful students will be published writers of feature content and will have the beginnings of a professional content portfolio. (Special Fee: $25.00).

NEWS REPORTING Prerequisite: JOU 1000 In-depth reporting with emphasis on modern news and feature stories. Stresses elements of news: sources, structure, style, and mechanics of production. (Special Fee: $6.00).

EDITING AND DESIGN Study and application of copydesk techniques: evaluation and copy editing, correction of faulty news stories, headline writing, page layout design, and work with wire copy. Recommend students also enroll in College Newspaper.
