ORNAMENTAL PLANT MAINTENANCE Prerequisite: PLS 1010C or departmental approval A comprehensive study of maintenance practices of ornamental plants and turfgrasses including plant selection, planting, mulching, mowing/pruning, fertilization techniques, and irrigation. An emphasis will be placed on the roles of integrated pest management (IPM) and best management practices (BMPs) in the protection of water resources. (Special Fee: $82.00).

ORNAMENTAL PLANT MATERIALS Detailed study of temperate zone plants used in Florida landscaping. Includes identification, growth characteristics, propagation, culture and uses of plants. PRINCIPLES OF ARBORICULTURE Prerequisite: PLS 1010C An overview of the principles of arboriculture including tree structure, tree biology, and basic soil plant relationships. Techniques and methods to evaluate and improve overall plant health, structural integrity, planting procedures, and seasonal pruning are presented. This course does not satisfy the general education requirement for science.

Includes greenhouse management; heating, cooling and humidity control; culture practices of growing foliage and other house plants with regard to propagation, pest control; plant acclimatization and marketing. Topics include mechanics of landscaping construction, materials selection and preparation, personnel hiring, training and retraining, work schedules, planning, labor analysis, pricing, bidding, and estimating. Research- seminar project conducted under strict supervision by qualified professors. Using accepted procedural format, representative of the agricultural research community. Research performed will be given to Horticulture classes involved in the subject matter areas being researched.
