INTRODUCTION TO THE FILM PROCESS Study of film-making process from concept to completion with special emphasis on the relationship between various job categories and the specific role of the "below the line" production technician.

HISTORY OF MOTION PICTURES An overview of film as an industry, mass medium, and art form.

SCREENWRITING Introduction to the basic techniques of screenwriting. Exercises in story structure, dialogue and character development. Introduction to screenwriting software.

ADVANCED SCREENWRITING Prerequisite: FIL 2100 with a minimum grade of C. This course advances a student's knowledge of the screenwriting process with an emphasis on completing and making a story.

FILM PRODUCTION I Prerequisites: ENC 1101, Mathematics Gen. Ed. Core Requirement, THE 1000, POS 2041 or AMH 2020, FIL 1420, Science Gen. Ed. Core Requirement, TPA 1380, TPA 1200C or TPA 1200 and TPA 1200L, TPA 2260C, TPA 2220C, and TPA 2290C Corequisites: FIL 2505C, FIL 2580C, FIL 2450C Through a series of lectures and demonstrations by the instructor and working professionals in the film and television industry, students are introduced to the competencies related to pre-production. Those competencies include an understanding of the language of cinema, story foundation and screenplay. Students will also begin the process of script breakdowns, both creative and technical. Students will participate as a technician in College-sponsored, short film productions. (Special Fee $260.00).

FILM PRODUCTION II Prerequisites: FIL 2421C, FIL 2450C, FIL 2505C, FIL 2580C Corequisites: FIL 2537C, FIL 2552C, FIL 2461 Through a series of lectures and demonstrations by the instructor and working professionals in the film and television industry, and production-related projects, students are introduced to the competencies related to production. Those competencies include creative and technical script analysis, directing the narrative (visual and working with actors), budgeting and understanding the collaboration between key creative and technical crew members. Students will develop and produce their own short films. Students will participate as technicians in College-sponsored film productions. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

FILM PRODUCTION III CAPSTONE Prerequisites: FIL 2432C, FIL 2537C, FIL 2552C, FIL 2461 Through a series of lectures and demonstrations by the instructor, lectures and demonstrations by working professional film personnel, and post-production project sessions, the students will be introduced to the competencies relating to post-production. Student will participate as a technician in College-sponsored film productions and learn all the elements involved with post-production on a film. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

FILM GRIPPING Corequisites: FIL 2421C, FIL 2505C, FIL 2580C Study of use of gripping skills and equipment as related to feature film production. Emphasis on strategies necessary to anticipate shooting needs and problem-solving. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

ART OF CINEMATOGRAPHY Corerequisite: FIL 2432C, FIL 2537C, FIL 2552C This course will focus on the art of visual storytelling through lighting and camera movement.

FILM LIGHTING Corequisites: FIL 2421C, FIL 2580C, FIL 2450C Study of film lighting techniques, practices and equipment. Includes lighting theory, power distribution systems and color theory. Special emphasis on working as part of film production team. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

FILM SOUND Corequisite: FIL 2432C, FIL 2552C, FIL 2461C Focuses on theory and practice of production and post-production film sound. Special emphasis on techniques of sound imaging in the filmmaking process. This course includes learning activity designed to ensure competence in the basic use of computers. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

POST-PRODUCTION SOUND FOR MOTION PICTURES Prerequisites: Acceptance to Advanced courses in Film Production A.S. Degree Special emphasis is placed on sound design, dialogue editing, and ADR (looping, creating sound effects, including Foley) as these things apply to feature film post-production.

FILM EDITING Corequisite: FIL 2432C, FIL 2537C, FIL 2461 Acquaints students with techniques and aesthetics of film editing. Emphasis on visual and audio post-production. This course includes learning activity designed to ensure competence in the basic use of computers. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

FILM CAMERA TECHNIQUES Corequisites: FIL 2421C, FIL 2505C, FIL 2450C Prepares student to function in all capacities as a member of motion picture camera department. Focuses on care and handling of equipment, documentation, and solving film-shooting problems. (Special Lab Fee: $260.00).

SELECTED TOPICS IN FILM Seminar for students interested in research, discussion and observation of special topics in film and film production. May be repeated for credit and grade forgiveness cannot be applied.

INTERNSHIP EXPLORATION IN FILM Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in Reading, Mathematics, English, and English for Academic Purposes; a minimum 2.0 institutional or overall GPA; and 12 credits, including FIL 2100. The Program Director/Program Chair/Program Coordinator or Internship Placement Office has the discretion to provide override approval as it relates to the waiver of required program/discipline-related courses. This course is a planned work-based experience that provides students with supervised career exploration activities and/or practical experiences to assist in confirming their education plans. Each earned credit hour of Internship requires a minimum of 80 clock hours of work. Multiple credit course. May be repeated for credit, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Internship Fee: $10.00).

INTERNSHIP IN FILM TECHNOLOGY Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in Reading, Mathematics, English and English for Academic Purposes; a minimum 2.0 institutional or overall GPA; completion of the limited access portion of the Valencia Film Production Technology Program; and Program Director's approval. The Program Director/Program Chair/Program Coordinator or Internship Placement Office has the discretion to provide override approval as it relates to the waiver of required program/discipline-related courses. This course is a planned work-based experience that provides students with supervised career exploration activities and/ or practical experiences. Each earned credit of internship requires a minimum of 80 clock hours of work. Multiple credit course. May be repeated for credit, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Internship Fee: $10.00).
