MUSIC APPRECIATION Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in ENC 1101 or ENC 1101H or IDH 1110. In this course, students will survey the history of classical music from antiquity to the modern period, focusing on western music. The curriculum may also integrate a variety of popular and global styles where appropriate. Minimum grade of C is required if MUL 1010 is used to satisfy the humanities requirement in general education.

HISTORY AND APPRECIATION OF JAZZ AND ROCK This course introduces students to the history and appreciation of American popular music forms, from early blues and spirituals to contemporary rock, electronica and urban styles, emphasizing the contribution of the recognized masters of the different genres and styles.

MUSIC LITERATURE Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in ENC 1101 or ENC 1101H or IDH 1110. Survey of compositional and performance styles of significant composers from Middle Ages to present. Extensive live and recorded listening experiences. Required of all music majors.
