Students pursuing an Associate in Arts, Specialized Associate in Arts Transfer, or Bachelor’s degree must meet the state‑mandated foreign language proficiency requirement outlined in Sections 1007.25 and 1007.262, Florida Statutes, and Rule 6A‑10.02412, Florida Administrative Code.
The foreign language proficiency requirement can be satisfied in one of the following ways:
High School Coursework
Completion of two years of instruction in the same foreign language at the high school level, with passing grades each year, as documented on an official high school transcript.
College-Level Coursework
Successful completion, with a grade of C or higher, of Elementary II coursework in a single foreign language. This requirement may be met by completing one of the following approved course sequences or their equivalents:
Credit by Examination or Proficiency Testing
The requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency through one of the following:
- A passing score on a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) foreign language examination.
- A passing score on a foreign language proficiency examination administered by the University of Central Florida.
- A qualifying score on an Advanced Placement (AP) foreign language examination (minimum score of 4).
Foreign language credit earned through coursework, CLEP, or AP may also be applied toward elective credit, as applicable.
Students whose native language is not English may satisfy the foreign language proficiency requirement by successfully completing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursework and fulfilling the Communications requirements for the Associate in Arts degree.
College-level proficiency in American Sign Language may satisfy this requirement through completion of eight semester credits in ASL or successful completion of ASL 2150. Students planning to transfer should note that some universities do not accept ASL to meet foreign language graduation requirements and are responsible for confirming transfer institution policies.
Satisfaction of Valencia College’s foreign language proficiency requirement may also fulfill foreign language admission requirements for Florida public universities; however, it may not meet graduation requirements at all institutions. Students are encouraged to verify foreign language requirements with their intended transfer institution.
