Academic Standards & Progress

College Policy 6Hx28: 4-7: Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and Withdrawals

Valencia College expects students to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Academic standing is reviewed at the end of each term and is based on the term and overall grade point average (GPA). Successful course completion is defined as earning a grade of A, B, C, D, S+, or S-, except in courses that require a minimum grade of C to meet prerequisite or program requirements.

Mid-Term Warning

Professors may notify students who are earning below a grade of C at or around mid-term. Students receiving mid-term warnings are encouraged to meet with their professor to discuss performance and available support. Not receiving a mid-term warning does not guarantee a passing grade.

Academic Warning

Students whose term GPA falls below 2.0 are placed on Academic Warning. To return to Good Academic Standing at the end of the next term, a student must earn both a term GPA and cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Students on Academic Warning are strongly encouraged to meet with a Student Success Coach to review academic progress, course planning, and available support services.

Academic Probation

Students whose term GPA falls below 2.0 for two consecutive terms are placed on Academic Probation and will be notified through their VC email.

While on Academic Probation, students must:

  • Connect with a Student Success Coach to develop an academic plan and review support resources; and
  • Obtain approval of the proposed course schedule from a Student Success Coach prior to registration for the next term.

The College may limit the number of credits a student may take while on Academic Probation.

To return to Good Academic Standing, a student must earn both a term GPA and cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Students requesting to enroll as transient students at another institution while on Academic Probation must obtain prior approval from a Student Success Coach. Transient requests submitted without prior approval will be denied.

Academic Suspension

Students whose term GPA falls below 2.0 for multiple terms while on Academic Probation are placed on Academic Suspension.

While on Academic Suspension, students:

  • Are prohibited from enrolling in credit courses at Valencia College for one full term (Fall, Spring, or Summer); and
  • Must complete the Suspension Readmission Application and all required steps by the published deadline in the Academic calendar.

Upon readmission from Suspension, students must earn a term GPA of 2.0 or higher. Failure to do so, or failure to comply with required readmission steps, will result in an additional Academic Suspension. Students with multiple suspensions may be prohibited from enrolling for longer than one term. Students return to Good Academic Standing when both the cumulative GPA and term GPA are 2.0 or higher.
