RED 3042. INTRODUCTION OF READING AND CONTENT FOR K-12.

INTRODUCTION OF READING AND CONTENT FOR K-12 Prerequisite: Admission to the BS in Elementary Education or admission to the EPI program or department approval. This course provides Florida Educator Accomplished Practices-aligned knowledge and skills for teachers and prospective teachers to establish a substantive understanding of the components of reading as a process: comprehension, oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary including use and interpretation of reading assessments, scientifically-based reading strategies, and interventions. This course addresses Reading Endorsement Competencies 1 and 2 and includes a 15-hour field experience.

FOUNDATIONS OF ASSESSMENT Prerequisite: Admission to Educator Preparation Institute Program or EPI department approval. Knowledge and skills for teachers and prospective teachers to identify and administer appropriate subject-specific and literacy assessments, use a systematic problem-solving process to analyze assessment data, inform reading and content instruction for all levels of readers, including for literacy evaluation and intervention, and equitably meet the needs of diverse, K-12 learners. This course addresses Reading Competency 3.

RED 3940. EPI CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE IN READING.

EPI CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE IN READING Prerequisites: RED 3042 and RED 4352 EPI Clinical Field Experience in Reading is for candidates to demonstrate knowledge of the components of reading, as well as assessments and data analysis, to implement a comprehensive research-based reading plan of instruction for all students. Candidates will engage in the systematic problem-solving process in a PK-12 classroom. The course addresses Reading Competency 5 and is reserved for those candidates seeking the full FL DOE Reading Endorsement.

RED 4352. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT FOR LITERACY.

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT FOR LITERACY Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in RED 3042 and passing scores on all four subtests of the Florida Teacher Certification General Knowledge Test or department approval. This course provides Florida Educator Accomplished Practices-aligned knowledge and skills for teachers and prospective teachers to identify and administer appropriate literacy assessments; to use a systematic problem-solving process to analyze assessment data; and to diagnose characteristics of reading difficulties, including dyslexia, and differentiate reading instruction accordingly across various educational levels in elementary, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), exceptional education, and language arts classrooms. This course addresses Reading Endorsement Competencies 3 and 4, ESOL Competencies 3 and 5, and includes a 15-hour field experience.

RED 4941. CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE IN READING.

CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE IN READING Prerequisite: Minimum grades of C in all Elementary Education BS courses and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and passing scores for the Florida Teacher Certification Examination Professional Education Test and the Elementary Education K-6 subject area examination and department approval. Corequisite: EDE 4943 and EDE 4936 This course serves as a field-based clinical experience in which students will apply their knowledge of literacy assessment and instruction in an elementary school classroom. The course involves activities which include collecting and analyzing reading assessment data, planning instruction based on information from data, implementing instruction, and monitoring students’ progress. This course is correlated to Florida Reading Competency 5 and Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs).
